Does LNCS Consumption Lead to Changes in Biomarkers of Health?
Virtual, Event
September 18, 2025
9:00 am – 10:00 am
IAFNS’ Low- & No-Calorie Sweetener (LNCS) Committee is hosting a 3-part webinar series to present new evidence from three large consortium projects studying the effects of LNCS. The projects include the Sweet Project: Developing evidence on the long-term effect of sweeteners on heath; Switch: Studying the effects of non-nutritive sweetened beverages on appetite during active weight loss; and Sweet Tooth: A trial looking at the effect of sweet exposure on sweet taste preference, intake and other biomarkers of health.
This webinar was the second in the series and provided new evidence on the relationship between LNCS and metabolic dysfunction including outcomes related to diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk. The speakers covered the effects of consumption of sweeteners and sweetness enhancers on metabolic and microbiota-mediated processes involved in satiety, consumer preference and health. It also covered how consuming more or less sweet-tasting foods and drinks for 6 months affects blood markers related to heart disease and diabetes.
Speakers:
Ellen Blaak PhD, Professor Human Biology, Maastricht University
Monica Mars, PhD, Associate Professor Human Nutrition, Wageningen University
Moderator: Corey Scott, PhD, Cargill, Inc.
Following the series, IAFNS will be hosting an Oct. 2 invitation-only dialogue with the speakers to discuss opportunities for future research and communication. To learn more about this dialogue please email science@iafns.org.
IAFNS is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). The webinar, ‘Does LNCS Consumption Lead to Changes in Biomarkers of Health?’ awards 1 Continuing Professional Education Unit (CPEU) in accordance with the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s CPEU Prior Approval Program.
This webinar was supported by the IAFNS Low- and No-Calorie Sweeteners Committee.
