Food Service Sector Sodium Dialogue
Washington, DC
October 25, 2022

On October 25, IAFNS brought together leaders from across the food service sector and government to participate in an open dialogue about sodium reduction opportunities and challenges specific to the Food Service Sector.

The IAFNS Sodium in Foods and Health Implications Committee (SoFHI) committee is in dialogue with the FDA related to its Voluntary Sodium Reduction Goals and Targets published in 2021. The guidance is intended to provide measurable voluntary short-term (2.5-year) goals for sodium content in commercially processed, packaged, and prepared foods to reduce excess population sodium intake. The FDA sodium reduction guidance specifically addresses food sold in the food service sector, stating: “The goals are applicable to all products commercially processed, packaged, and prepared by industry (including food service establishments), regardless of whether they are sold directly to consumers, other manufacturers, or to food service establishments (restaurants and other food service establishments).”
