The intestine is a critical site for interaction between the host and the external environment. Its complex structure plays key roles in selective absorption of nutrients or other dietary or environmental components, with implications for local and systemic effects. The gut microbiome is also active at the interface between the intestinal lumen and the epithelium, interacting with the mucosa. As consumers and patients seek optimized ‘gut health’, the science of what this means and how it is measured given these complex interactions is still evolving.

In this webinar, Dr. Alessio Fasano, Director of the Mucosal Immunology and Biology Research Center, Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at the Harvard Medical School, will share his experience founded in work on celiac disease with implications for the maintenance and measurement of a healthy gut.

After the webinar, the IAFNS Gut Health and Carbohydrates Committees will delve more deeply into this topic with Dr. Fasano consider priority research questions to address as part of the committee program. To learn more, email science@iafns.org.
