Controversy continues around classifying foods based on variable criteria that incorporate some degree of food processing and characteristics related to food formulation. Processed foods are in the news, on social media, and debated across the globe. Health-related characteristics of processed foods continue to dominate discussions from consumers to policy makers.
But the science landscape is not stagnant. Research is continuing. This event will provide an updated view of the scientific landscape on processed foods and connect attendees with research consortia that are working to advance science and benefit public health. With science and evidence, all stakeholders can continue to revise and strengthen their approach.
This event is organized by the tripartite IAFNS Working Group on Science-Based Principles for Food Classification Based on Processing and Formulation to Support Public Health.
We want to thank our sponsors for their support: American Bakers Association, American Frozen Food Institute, Grain Foods Foundation, International Dairy Foods Association.
For more information, inclduing how to support the program with sponsorship, please contact science@iafns.org.

The 2025 Food Safety Consortium event will focus on the convergence of policy, science, and best practices. With the conference being held near Washington, D.C., this year will place a renewed emphasis on policy discussions, reflecting the growing need to address regulatory and legislative issues. The program will also prioritize the sharing of best practices, offering attendees the chance to learn from one another and engage in collaborative problem-solving.
IAFNS will be presenting a talk:
From Kibble to Crackers: Cross-Learning on Pathogens in Low-Moisture Foods
Expand
Monday, Oct. 20 from 11:15 a.m - 12:15 p.m. ET. The presentation will be given during the session: "Dry Doesn't Mean Safe: Pathogens in Low Moisture Foods."
