Rapid and Sensitive Detection of Hepatitis A Virus in Representative Food Matrices
Journal of Virological Methods, 2008
Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is an important cause of foodborne disease worldwide. The detection of this virus in naturally contaminated food products is complicated by the absence of a reliable culture method and the presence of matrix-associated compounds that inhibit molecular detection. The study describes detection of HAV in food matrices, and the results are published in the Journal of Virological Methods (2008;147:177–187).

Persistence of Human Noroviruses on Food Preparation Surfaces and Human Hands
Food Environmental Virology, 2009
This study, published in Food and Environmental Virology (2009;1:141–147), examines the persistence of representative human noroviruses on the fingertips of volunteers and on commonly used food preparation surfaces.

Critical Research Needs in Food Safety Microbiology
Food Protection Trends, 2009
As discussed in this review published in the December issue of Food Protection Trends, control, detection, and mitigation were identified as three critically important research areas by the IAFNS Committee on Food Microbiology for looking at spore-forming bacterial pathogens, spoilage organisms, and Salmonella.

Early Risk Determinants and Later Health Outcomes
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2009
This workshop, discussed in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2009;89), stemmed from a quest to consolidate current knowledge on the early determinants of maternal and child health outcomes related to obesity, cardiovascular disease risk, and neurodevelopment. The primary goal was to delineate the relative influence of genetics and environmental factors.
